Chapter 13

Elle

The alarm went off at seven, but I’d been awake for over an hour, staring up at the ceiling and rethinking my decision to test the romantic waters between Judd and me.

What a stupid idea. Clearly, the turkey coma had affected my logic and reasoning.

Punching the snooze button, I rolled over and huffed. Okay, so maybe I couldn’t blame it all on the Thanksgiving food. That my skin still tingled where he’d rubbed his over the top of mine probably played a small part, but after a long night of rather graphic dreams, I wasn’t exactly excited about spending the entire day with him. One look at my face and he’d surely be able to see every dirty thought.

“Oh, good lord,” I said, sitting up and kicking off the covers.

Staying in bed worrying about the day would not make things any better. In fact, it would just make them worse if Judd showed up, and I wasn’t ready to go. I’d end up dressed like a slob in my hurry to get ready, and I needed a repeat performance of yesterday’s Elle. Not to mention, he would give me crap about being late, as always.

But really... 8 A.M. on a holiday?

By 7:45, I’d showered, shaved, blow dried my hair, and nearly poked my left eye out with my eyeliner brush. Pouting, I considered the pros and cons of starting over as tears leaked out of the corner of the now furious red eye. The only other option was to thicken the liner on the other eye, which was far too dramatic a look for today.

Half my reflection blurred as the makeup in my eye stuck to my contact lens and the traitorous piece of plastic folded up and fell into the sink. Muttering a string of colorful words, I picked up the blue tinted lens and tried to clean off the gel liner. Only, my efforts were a bit too vigorous, and the lens ripped.

“No,” I screamed and stomped my foot like a child. This was my last pair. “Shit.”

Chucking it into the garbage, I pulled out the other contact. Then, I swiped a makeup cleaning cloth over my eyes, removing the crooked liner and the artfully applied shadow. A few flicks of mascara over my lashes—because let’s not get too crazy—and I slid on my black-framed glasses.

“There she is, ladies and gentlemen.” I glared at the plain girl staring back at me. “Not gonna be able to beat em off with a stick.”

The doorbell rang, making me jump. Judd was here. 8 on the dot, and I wasn’t dressed. Bypassing the cute dress and tights I’d set out, I stuffed myself into a favorite pair of jeans and dragged an oversized sweatshirt from college over my head.

The doorbell jangled again. I snatched up my purse and opened the door with a breathless, “Hello.”

Judd looked up from his phone. A slow grin spread across his face, making me flush.

“You’re on time,” he said.

“Of course. This is grown up Elle. New and improved,” I said, ignoring my heart knocking furiously against my ribcage.
